Boiler Making a Noise? What Banging, Kettling and Whooshing Actually Mean
A boiler making a noise is telling you something specific, and the sound itself is most of the diagnosis. A rumbling, kettle-like boil usually means limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger; a constant hum or whine is normally the pump; sharp ticking as the heating warms up is almost always pipework expanding against a joist. Most noises are a nuisance rather than a danger — but a few are your cue to turn the boiler off and ring a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Our engineers hear all of these across Deal, Dover, Sandwich and Thanet every winter, and the frightening-sounding ones are frequently the least serious. Here is how to tell them apart.
Start here: which noises mean stop straight away
Only a short list of sounds warrants turning the boiler off at the switch and calling for help first:
- Any noise alongside a smell of gas — leave the boiler alone, do not touch electrical switches, open windows and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
- A loud bang when the boiler fires up. A deep thump on ignition means unburnt gas is collecting for a moment before it lights. That is a combustion problem and needs a Gas Safe engineer.
- Water dripping or spraying inside the case, whatever the noise sounds like.
- A whistling or hissing that gets louder as the boiler heats, with the pressure gauge climbing well past 2.5 bar.

Kettling: the rumble that sounds like a kettle boiling
This is the single most common noise call we take. The boiler builds to a rolling, rumbling boil a minute or two after the heating comes on, sometimes with a knock or bang at the end of the cycle.
Kettling means water is not flowing through the heat exchanger fast enough, so it briefly boils to steam and collapses again. Two causes, usually together:
- Limescale. Hard water leaves scale on the hottest surface in the system, which is the heat exchanger. Scale narrows the waterways and insulates the metal, so localised boiling starts.
- Sludge. Black iron oxide from corroding radiators settles into the low points and the exchanger, doing the same thing from the other direction.
Why kettling is so common in East Kent
Most of our patch sits on chalk, and the water out of the tap here is genuinely hard. The fix depends on how far it has gone. Caught early, a chemical clean and a decent inhibitor dose will usually quieten it. Where the system is loaded with sludge it needs a power flush, with a magnetic filter fitted afterwards so the debris that forms next gets caught instead of circulating. Where the exchanger is heavily scaled and the boiler is well into its second decade, replacement is often the more honest answer — we would rather say so than take money for a flush that buys you a season.
Why is my boiler making a noise like an aeroplane?
People search this because it is genuinely alarming — a roaring, jet-engine sound rather than the normal quiet whoosh of the fan. In practice it is usually one of three things:
- The fan itself. Fan bearings wear, and a worn fan gets steadily louder over weeks. A replaceable part, not a new boiler.
- A restricted flue or air intake. Debris, a bird’s nest or a partially blocked terminal makes the fan work harder and roar. On the coast, salt-laden air corrodes flue terminals faster than inland, so terminals in Deal, Walmer and the Thanet seafront properties deserve a proper look at every service.
- Heavy kettling, which some people describe as a roar rather than a rumble.
Is it dangerous? The noise itself is not. The cause can be, because anything affecting the flue affects how combustion gases leave the property. That makes it a Gas Safe job — flue and combustion work is never DIY.
Banging and clunking
There are two different bangs, and only one of them matters. A bang at ignition, as the boiler lights, is the serious one covered above — book it in and leave the boiler off in the meantime.
Banging or clunking as the system warms and cools is nearly always pipework. Copper expands when it heats, and where a pipe passes through a tight notch in a joist or rests on a floorboard it moves in jerks, giving that irregular tick-tick-clunk that seems to come from the ceiling. It is not harmful and it is not a boiler fault. Easing the clip or packing the notch with felt is the fix — a small plumbing job rather than a heating one.
Humming, whining and vibrating
A constant electrical hum that rises and falls with the heating is the circulating pump. Some hum is normal; a pump that is markedly louder than it used to be, or that vibrates through the floor, is either failing, running at too high a speed setting, or trying to push water through a system stiff with sludge. Pumps are a serviceable, replaceable part — and where the vibration turns out to be the mounting or a bracket rather than the pump itself, it is a smaller job again.
Boiler making a noise when not in use
If the heating is off and the hot water is not running but the boiler still makes noise, work through it in this order:
- Is it actually off? Many boilers run a short anti-seize cycle for the pump and diverter valve, and most fire periodically to maintain a cylinder or pre-heat setting.
- Gurgling with the system cold is usually air in the radiators or pipework, and bleeding them often deals with it. If air keeps coming back, something is drawing it in and that needs looking at.
- Dripping or trickling from a cold system means water is moving where it should not be — check the pressure gauge, and if it is falling, our guide to a boiler losing pressure explains what that means.
- Ticking with everything off is metal cooling and contracting, exactly as it expanded on the way up.
Boiler making a noise when the heating is on
Noise that appears with the heating running but not with hot water alone points at the circuit rather than the boiler: sludge, trapped air, a pump working too hard, or a diverter valve. What it costs to get a noisy boiler sorted
Repairs and diagnostics are charged by the hour, not at a fixed price: £80 + VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £40 + VAT per half hour after that, plus any parts. A noise that turns out to be a rattling bracket is often done inside that first hour. A power flush is quoted separately, since it depends on the number of radiators.

When to call us
A ticking pipe or a mild hum can safely wait for the next service. A bang on ignition, a roaring fan, or a rumble that has arrived suddenly should not — those get worse, and they cost more to put right in December than in September.
